How much data you need

  • Maps, messaging and tickets only: about 1 GB for a weekend.
  • Plus photos and stories every day: 3–5 GB for 4–7 days.
  • Video calls home every evening or hotspot for a partner: 10 GB or an unlimited plan.

Set it up before you fly

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
  2. Buy the plan for your country, or the Europe plan if you cross borders; the QR code arrives by email.
  3. At home, on Wi-Fi, scan the QR code to add the eSIM.
  4. When you land, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
  5. Keep data roaming off on your home line, so it stays reachable for SMS without roaming charges for data.

Tips for the markets

Markets are busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings and in the last weekend before Christmas, and mobile data can slow down in the crowd. Download offline maps of the old town on hotel Wi-Fi.

Several markets use a deposit system for mulled-wine mugs, and most stalls take cards, but carry some cash for smaller stalls.
